Why Great Blue Heron?

Great Blue Heron Graphic created by me

I remember the first time that I spotted the Great Blue Heron in my home Community of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, I was out on a drive, with my beautiful Mother.  I was simply in awe of that unique and handsome being.  This majestic bird spoke volumes to me in its prehistoric look, the unique way in which it flew with its large powerful, deep, slow wing beats.

Later I learned that these birds:

  • often nest in colonies

  • share nurturing duties: both the male and the female incubate the eggs and feed the young

  • are patient hunters, often waiting motionless for several minutes before catching their prey

  • are generally silent, but do have a repertoire of noises

  • moult or replace old feathers with new ones, four times from birth to two years

  • have elaborate courtship and other displays

  • stand strong in the face of adversity to feed themselves and their young

In so many ways, the Great Blue Heron reminds me of my Community, my people, My Mother and our teachings of long ago.  Just like this bird carries on with their responsibilities, it reminds me to honour and share the teachings to the best of my ability.  Each time I see a Great Blue Heron it reminds me of the unique beauty in this world and to be grateful for creation.
